In 1982, Southcentral Foundation (SCF) began a journey toward wellness in the Native Community. Under the tribal authority of Cook Inlet Region Inc., Native leadership began taking ownership of the federally run health system. In 1999, the transfer of ownership was complete, and Alaska became the first state to be completely self-governed.
The health system experienced in Southcentral Alaska today, known as SCF's Nuka Model of Care, is managed by Alaska Native people for Alaska Native people. The results are astounding. SCF has partnered with its customer/ owners to develop an award-winning health care system made up of a wide range of programs to address physical, mental, emotional and spiritual wellness. Today, SCF provides services for over 50,000 Alaska Native and American Indian people in the Anchorage Service Unit area, totaling over 100,000 square miles.
The transformation of health care under the Nuka Model has earned attention both domestically and internationally. More importantly, however, its emphasis on relationships is allowing Native people to experience high-quality services, increased prevention measures and improved customer satisfaction.
